TTG Asia, the region's leading travel trade business resource, heard from Grail Insights' Managing Director, Vivek Neb about Malaysian travel trends. Neb shared insights on Malaysian outbound travel spending in a keynote address during the recent Travel Meet - Asia in Kuala Lumpur.
Neb noted that, “While Malaysian outbound travel spend is expected to grow by almost 42% in 2026, price-conscious travel patterns will continue to affect the choice of destination. A majority of Malaysians are conscious about prices while making bookings, which affects the choice of their destination.” He added that more Southeast Asia natives are traveling within the region due to time constraints and affordability. They are getting travel information through word-of-mouth and online reviews.
Recent research from Grail Insights revealed that Malaysian households take an average of 1.8 trips annually. Travel spending is expected to increase from 3,100 USD in 2015 to 4,000 USD by 2026. This translates to a 3.6 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR), higher than the estimated CAGR of Asia-Pacific of 0.8 percent over the same period.
